Read for Books 2023: Reading into Imagination
In a world where technology often takes centre stage, we believe that the magic of a good book can never be replaced. Organised by the National Library Board (NLB), Springfielders participated in the Read for Books 2023 for the second year running. This event allows Springfielders to also contribute back to the society as for every 15 minutes of reading, NLB will donate 1 book to those in need. Our students were given the opportunity to delve into various captivating themes of literature. Participating in this event reinforced the department’s belief that reading is not just a pastime but a key that unlocks the doors of imagination.
Student Activist Programme 2023: Amplifying Voices for Change
In a society marked by various challenges and global concerns, the department recognises the need for empower the students and exercise their student agency. The Student Activist Programme is a niche programme for our Secondary Three students and it is aimed to nurture orators who can articulate their thoughts with grace and passion. Our students were invited to address contemporary issues through persuasive speeches and assembly sharing. Some topics that students shared about was gaming addiction and animal abuse. It is through this platform that we hope students will be able to better appreciate the language as a tool for both expression and transformation.
Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023: Cultivating Excellence
With the theme ‘A Youth-Powered Commonwealth’, Springfielders took to their pens and paper to address global issues, and thereby displaying remarkable creativity and critical thinking skills. Such essay entries illuminated the power of the written word to transcend boundaries and connect people across the world.
Secondary 1 cohort Learning Journey to watch ‘Perfecting Pratas’: A Taste of Culture and Literature
Giving Springfielders exposure to the real world has always been a cornerstone of our English Language and Literature curriculum. In fact, for Literature, our teachers believe that Literature is not confined to the texts that we are reading. As such, our Secondary 1 cohort embarked on a delightful learning journey to watch ‘Perfecting Pratas’, an experience that combined culture, tradition and powerful storytelling. It highlighted that Literature can be found in the most unexpected places, emphasizing that life itself is a story waiting to be discovered.
The English Language and Literature Department remains committed in fostering creativity, honing communication skills and nurturing the love for the English Language. We believe that language and literature are not merely subjects to be studied in class, but in fact are vital elements for understanding the world and making it a better place for us to live in.
