Humanities Week 2023: “A Whole New World” with the Humanities Department in May
Springfield’s inaugural Humanities Week took place in Term 2, Week 9 when the school celebrated the humanities subjects – Geography, History, Literature and Social Studies by organising activities throughout the week surrounding the theme of “A Whole New World”.
Students were treated to a special programme during their Humanities lessons. They got an opportunity to test their knowledge on the world we live in via a Kahoot quiz. Subsequently all students were given a “Passport” to explore a whole new world in the library. Here the students got to admire the various exhibits created by our very own Springfielders. The mini exhibition offered an opportunity for our students to immerse into “tropical and mangrove forests” which were created by the Geography students. Others played board games created by the History students. And if you are a Literature buff, you could admire the dioramas created by the Literature students who interpreted their understanding of the setting and tone of a text through a diorama. Not forgetting the Social Studies students who prepared posters and designed clay models to share ideas of sustainability in the 21st century. A special exhibit in the library was a model of what a home looked like in Singapore in the 1960s.This special exhibit is a model of the family home of one of our Springfield teachers, Miss Shermin Chee, in the 1960s and depicted the challenges of living in a home very different from our HDB homes.
Another highlight during Humanities Week was the creation of Fusion Meat Free Dishes by our very own canteen vendors. To embrace this whole new world where diversity is a norm and there is acceptance by the different cultures, our canteen vendors curated meat-free fusion recipes like kimchi fried rice and nasi lemak with mushroom. Meat-free dishes were on the menu as this was in line with the 21st century focus to reduce carbon footprints. Our students also got the opportunity to show their support by taking a pledge at the environmental booth at the Eco-hub in the canteen.
The week culminated with a Humanities challenge where selected students from the various classes raced to look for answers at the mini exhibition to win exciting prizes.
It was indeed a happening Humanities Week for Springfield where students were able to be transported to a whole new world and experience the richness of the human experience outside the classroom.
I think the humanities week was a success. I enjoyed viewing the displays, participating in the activities and tasting the freshly grown lettuce. Along with my group, we also created a game that was displayed in the history section. Although the process of creating a functional game while incorporating aspects of the history of healthcare in the country was tough, I enjoyed the experience and was glad that I was presented with the opportunity to do so.
