羚羊號角與童軍之父

1896年,身為陸軍上校的童軍之父–貝登堡,在南非的尚加尼戰役中,與馬塔貝勒戰士對陣。在一次襲擊中,他首次聽到塔貝勒戰士利用羚羊號角迅速傳遞訊息的聲音。

 


數年後,貝登堡返回英國,於1907年帶同羚羊號角參與童軍首次實驗性露營。190781日,貝登堡帶領著20個青少年在英國白浪島舉行首次實驗露營,他吹響羚羊號角,不但意味著露營活動正式展開,更為露營活動增添冒險色彩和趣味。

 


13年後,羚羊號角聲於英國基維爾舉行的童軍領袖訓練班再次響起,以召集參加的童軍領袖。羚羊號角不但象徵童軍運動,更標誌著童軍領袖的木章訓練。

Kudu Horn and Baden Powell

As a Colonel in Africa in 1896, Baden Powell first identified the kudu horn at the Battle of Shangani. He was impressed by the tremendous sound of kudu horn used by the Matabele warriors in the battle to spread the alarm signals quickly.

 


Few years later, Baden Powell was back to England. At the 1st experimental camp on 1 August 1907, he summoned 20 youths on Brownsea Island with the sound of kudu horn. The kudu horn not only marked the commencement of the camp, but also made it more adventurous and enjoyable.

 


Thirteen years later, the kudu horn was also used in Scoutmaster training courses at Gilwell Park. It was the participants, Kudu horn has long been a symbol of Scouting and of Wood Badge Training.

羚羊號角與今日的童軍運動

2007年是世界童軍運動百周年,為慶祝這件盛事,第21屆世界童軍大露營再次在童軍運動發源地–英國舉行。各參加的童軍會員國派出童軍代表,出席8月1日於白浪島舉行的日出禮。當羚羊號角聲響起,白浪島和第21屆世界童軍大露營廣場上的四萬名童軍一起覆誓,重申對童軍運動的承諾,一同慶祝童軍運動的誕生。世界不同地方的童軍訓練班也以羚羊號角召集童軍,依舊跟隨童軍之父的足跡,繼續燃亮童軍運動。

 


Kudu Horn and Scout Movement Today

To celebrate the centenary of Scouting in 2007, the 21st World Scout Jamboree was held in the origin of the Scout Movement – England. On 1 August, every participating Scout associations sent their Scout members as representatives to attend the “Scouting‘s Sunrise” ceremony held on Brownsea Island. With the sound of the kudu horn, 40,000 Scouts on Brownsea Island and at the arena of the Jamboree campsite reaffirmed as Scouts to celebrate the birth of Scouting.

 


Scout training courses from all parts of the world use kudu horn to summon the Scouts. They follow the footsteps of Baden Powell to light up the Scout Movement continuously.

生長於東非及南非的大羚羊,擁有修長的身體及長長的四肢,皮毛顏色由啡色或藍灰色至啡紅色,頭上長有螺旋形彎曲的長角。由於牠們行動十分敏捷,聽覺、視覺和嗅覺都很銳利,所以不易被捕獲。


What’s Kudu?

Kudu (pronounced as “koodoo”) is a woodland antelope fount throughout eastern and southern Africa. It has a long spiral-shaped horn and a narrow body with long legs. Its coat can range from brown/bluish-grey to reddish-brown. In addition to its reputable sense of hearing, its keen eyesight, sense of smell and the great speed make it a difficult animal to capture.
