HONG KONG SCOUT JAMBOREE / JAMBORETTE

Foreword

The earliest recorded Scout camping in Hong Kong can be traced to the year 1914. The camp was located at Murray Barracks in Central, a place close to Cheung Kong Centre today. The Scout Group of St. Joseph’s College held the first group camping there. By 1930s the number of Scouts had increased. Hong Kong wide Scout camping had also started. In 1938 or 1939, Hong Kong Christian Scout Spring Jamborette. Hong Kong District Scouts also held the first district Jamborette in 1950, after the World War II. In the past 100 years in history, Hong Kong held a total of 8 Hong Kong Jamborees/ Jamborettes.

Jamborette Colony Hong Kong

To celebrate the centenary of the birth of the founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell and Scout Movement’s golden jubilee, the Hong Kong Colony Jamborette was held in Kam Tsin Village in Sheung Shui for 4 days combining a weekend and the Chung Yeung Festival holiday from 19 October to 22 October 1957. It was held in the beautiful autumn season. 1,360 people participated in the Colony Jamborette, accounting for on-third of all the Scouts in Hong Kong. The Jamborette badge was similar to the emblem of the 9th World Scout Jamboree. The main designs for both were Tudor Rose and Scout’s Arrowhead. Below, there were Chinese characters 全港童子軍大露營 and at above there were English words Hong Kong Colony Jamborette. Inside the rose, B-P 1907 and 1957 were etched on. The camp fee was HKD5 per participants. It included foods for the entire duration of the camp and a camp badge.

The camp site was about 2 miles Southeast of Sheung Shui train station, close to Kam Tsin Village, golf course, and Sheung Shui Farm owned by the Hong Kong government. The camp site was on a flat hill, planted with plenty of pine trees in an area of about 810,000 square feet. Two roads went through the camp site. The camp site was well equipped with water and electricity were provided. First aid stations and kiosks were also set up.

Golden Jubilee Jamborette

The year 1961 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of Hong Kong Scout Movement. The Scout Association of Hong Kong held the Golden Jubilee Jamborette for 6 nights and 7 days at year end. The camp site was located in Kowloon Tsai (now Morse Park) near Kai Tak Airport. It was considered as at the edge of the city at that time. To show its importance, the Scout Association of Hong Kong had set up a task force 2 years before, headed by senior officer Mang Huen Lo, Executive Commissioner responsible for planning and assistance to H. C. Ma, Camp Director. The theme of the Jamborette was One World, which emphasized the point that every Scout was a member of the World Scout Movement and there should be no limit imposed based on race or nationality. All Scouts were brothers of an international family under the spirit of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, 2,732 people participated in this Jamborette. 385 of the participants were camp staff and 139 were Scout representatives from 11 overseas territories including the United Kingdom, Singapore, Borneo, Ceylon, Malaya, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, and the United States of America.

The camp was held from 27 December 1961 to 2 January 1962. Sir Robert Black, Colony Chief Scout, presided over the opening ceremony. The event was highlighted by the visit of Sir Charles Maclean, Chief Scout of the Commonwealth, He toured the camp site on 31 December and presided over the closing ceremony the day after. In addition, what made the event unforgettable to the members of the camp was the severe weather. It was winter at the coldest coupled with the hoist of the strong monsoon signal and heavy rain in the evening of 30 December. The camp was flooded and some canvases collapsed due to the accumulation of water. Some units had to retreat to nearby La Salle College temporarily. The weather condition was a test of bravery and fearless spirit for the Scouts. Just like Lord Robert Baden-Powell once said, “Any fool can camp in a nice day and only adverse weather can show the spirit of the Scout. “

Diamond Jubilee Jamboree Hong Kong

The Scout Association held a week long Diamond Jubilee Jamboree in Castle Peak, New Territories in July 1971 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Hong Kong Scouts. This large scale Jamboree was attended by about 5,000 people including Hong Kong Scouts and Scouts from Southeast Asia countries. The theme of the jamboree was “Unity”, which emphasized on the spirit that all Scouts were brothers and sisters in the same family. The campsite was located at A1 Castle Peak Development (now Tai Hing Estate, Tuen Mun) with an area of 1,396,000 square feet. The camp had 5 sub-camps. The badge and cap for Scouts and staff in each sub-camp were distinguished by the different colour belonging to each sub-camp. The badge was attached with a button-hole and could also write his or her name directly on the badge, it was a new improvement. This jamboree was similar to the last Jamborette in that it was challenged with the adverse weather. The date of the Jamboree was shifted to 23 July t0 29 July from the original plan of 22 July to 28 July due to Typhoon Lucy. Typhoon damaged certain camp facilities, such as the gate to Sub-Camp Somers of the New Territories Region. However the Scouts re-established the campsite with the fastest possible speed and made it possible to open the site in time on 23 July. Shortly after Typhoon Nadine also visited the camp. Camp facilities were once again put up for the test. The camp was flooded due to heavy rain. All participants had to retreat to the newly built but unoccupied building of San Fat Estate in Tuen Mum for accommodation. Just like what Lord Robert Baden-Powell once said: “Hero is baptized by the winds and rain of adverse weather.” This experience brought memories with pride for the participants, especially those Scouts who braved the chilly wind and rain during the Golden Jubilee Jamborette.

The closing ceremony was held on 28 July, one day delay from original plan. Erskine Gladstone, JP, Chief Scout of the Commonwealth, made a special trip to preside over the closing ceremony. The Jamboree closed in an enthusiastic atmosphere.

Hong Kong International Camporee 75 Join-in

To let more Scouts to enjoy the fun from World Scout Jamboree and the friendship from Scouts worldwide, the Scout Association of Hong Kong planned Hong Kong International Camporee at Shek Kong Barracks. But due to the regime change in Vietnam, huge of refugees arrived in Hong Kong. The barracks was changed to refugee camp. Camporee was also forced to change its venue to the small camp at Lam Tsuen, Tai Po. The camp was held for 3 days from 27 July to 29 July 1975 only. Although campsite was small and simple, overseas Scout units in Hong Kong, such as Indonesian Scouts, US Scouts, Canadian Scouts, etc. participated.

Hong Kong International Jamborette 1982

To Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of World Scout Movement, the Scout Association of Hong Kong held the Hong Kong International Jamborette at Tai Tam Campsite from 8 December to 30 December 1982. Due to the venue limitation, the Jamborette could only receive about 200 Scouts and 50 leaders coming from different places, including US Scouts, Silver Jubilee District Scouts, and Gurkha's Scouts. There were also Scouts representative from Japan, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The activity was brought by leader was assigned to each team. Although it was a small scale Jamborette, the meaning of Jamboree was clearly exhibition and the spirit of friendship experienced by all participants.

Hong Kong Diamond Jubilee Jamboree

The Hong Kong Diamond Jubilee Jamboree, held in Tai Po Kung, New Territories, was the largest Jamboree to date. 5,200 local and overseas participants celebrated together the 75the Anniversary of Scouting in Hong Kong. In addition to Scouts from 13 countries and territories in Asia-Pacific, 8 youth uniform groups in Hong Kong and representatives from Guangzhou Youth Association also participated in the event. The theme of the Jamboree was "March On", meaning that the Scout Movement would move and leap forward with time. The camp site was originally intended as a barracks for British army and was tentatively named Kohima Barracks. By the time the lot was levelled and due to the changes in political environment, the Government of Hong Kong had not decided the lot's final use. The Government then decided to lend the site temporarily to the Scout Association of Hong Kong, solving the difficulty of not being able to hold another Jamboree for 15 years due to the lack of suitable camp site. The Jamboree was held for 6 days from 27 December 1986 to 1 January 1987, Sir David Akers-Jones, KBE, CMG, JP, Acting Governor of Hong Kong presided at the opening ceremony on 28 December. In his speech, he encouraged the Scouts to follow the 75th Anniversary Theme to march on together.

During the Jamboree, the Association held 2 special activities " Egg Hunt" and "Knot Competition" in hope of breaking the Guinness World Record. 3,000 Cub Scouts searched for hidden eggs in the camp site within a pre-determined time frame. The result was that a total of 72,731 eggs were found, breaking the world record previously held by the United States of America. The other attempt on world's fastest knot tying record of 6 knots was however unsuccessful.

Upon the completion of the Jamboree, Scout Association of Hong Kong awarded the Hong Kong Diamond Jubilee Jamboree Medallion to  staff who had contributed significantly to the Jamboree, first of its kind in the history of Hong Kong Scouting.

Hong Kong Scout Millennium Jamboree

To mark the dawn of a new millennium, the Scout Association of Hong Kong Millennium Jamboree in Sai Kung Country Parks, New Territories for 6 days from 28 December 1999 to 2 January 2000, about 3,300 Scouts participated in the Jamboree. 216 participants came from 10 overseas Scout organizations. There were also 3,600 day campers. The camp site was adjacent to Hoi Ha Wan Marine Parks and far away from the city with beautiful views of mountains and ocean. After the Jamboree, the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region made the Wan Tsai Peninsula as a permanent camp site.

The theme of this Jamboree was "Live the Nature's Way". The Jamboree intended to enhance the environment protection awareness and promote friendship among world's Scouts by letting the participants to take part in various activities and workshops. The Jamboree provided 7 units, a total of more than 30 activities to participant, including adventure activities, Global Development Village, Creative Saloon, Leisure and Sports Corner, Scout Skills Competition, Sea and Land Activities, and I love the Nature Activities. Participants received a commemorative badge when they finished any activity of any one unit. A participant badge was also awarded when all units were completed. This encouraged participants to take part in full and enjoy the fun of the Jamboree. Also members of the camp broke the world record of making a link chain with 4,500 Reef Knots in a total length of 6,858 metres.

The weather during the Jamboree was fine with the exception of the mornings and evenings when were a bit cold. Plenty of sunshine was seen during the day, which paved the way for smooth running of activities. Unlike other Jamboree, this Jamboree was sponsored by commercial organizations in addition to the support of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Leisure and Cultural Service Department, Provisional Regional Council, etc. What was more important was that the success of the Jamboree could not have been achieved without the generous donation of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charity Trust. Out of the ordinary practice, the Jamboree named this event  "Hong Kong Scout Jockey Club Millennium Jamboree". Chief Commissioner of Scout Association awarded the Hong Kong Scout Millennium Jamboree Medallion and the Hong Kong Scout Millennium Jamboree Star to camp staff and leaders in recognizing their contribution to the Jamboree.

90th Anniversary Hong Kong Jamboree

To celebrate the 90th of the founding of Hong Kong Scout Movement, Scout Association of Hong Kong once again held the Jamboree at the Wan Tsai Peninsula camp site in Sai Kung Country Parks. The Jamboree was held from 23 to 26 December 2001. Although only lasted for 4 days and 3 nights, the Jamboree was not a simple task. The budget alone was HKD 5 million. Together local campers, overseas campers, staff and day campers, there were more than 5,800 people participated in the event. Furthermore, the Jamboree also held holiday camp for Cub Scouts. Although they could not stay overnight at the Wan Tsai camp site, the two activities which were held simultaneously had been given Cub Scouts a unique sense of Jamboree atmosphere.

The theme of the Jamboree was "Do My Best". It was the theme not only for teams but also for individuals. This was reflected in activities such as adventure activities, wooden raft making, pioneering projects, etc. At the same time in order to arouse the level of interests, the campers needed to cook their own dinners. This proved to be a challenges to the staff because it was not a simple task to organize cooking areas, design menus, ensure five prevention, handle leftover food, etc., especially in a country park where there were a lot of restrictions. Although there were only 4 days, each unit still tried their best to make sure everything was done perfectly. For example the gates to the sub-camps were not minimally built because of a short camp period.

The weather was fantastic during the Jamboree, although the temperature dropped suddenly and it rained for a few days before the Jamboree. Although some joked that there had been four seasons in a day, the sunshine was sufficient and all activities could be carried out as planned. Although fast-paced, all activities were extraordinary and made the event memorable for all campers.

The Metropolitan Jamboree

The year 2006 was the 95th Anniversary of Hong Kong Scouting and the year 2007 was the 100th year since Scout Movement was founded by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907. To commemorate this milestone, the Scout Association of Hong Kong organized a series of events to celebrate. One of the highlights was the "Jamboree to celebrate the 95th Anniversary of Hong Kong Scouting & the Centenary of World Scouting". The Jamboree was also named as "Metropolitan Jamboree" as it was held in the heart of urban city - West Kowloon Cultural District. It was the second time for a Jamboree to be held at the city center since the Hong Kong Golden Jubilee Jamborette in 1961. To avoid the humid and hot summer and to let students join the Jamboree during their Christmas holiday, the Jamboree took place from 27 December 2006 to 1 January 2007. The period also marked the transition from the 95th Anniversary of Hong Kong Scouting to the kick-off of the Centenary of World Scouting. On the 29th of December, the organizer held the Metropolitan Jamboree Open Day for Scouts and people interested in Scout activities.

The theme of the Jamboree was "Gifts for Peace". Apart from traditional Scouting activities, Campfire and International Night, campers could also enjoy various sub-camp activities with themes on culture, conservation, science & technology and global development. Camping at the campsite located at the side of the Victoria Harbour which was world-famous for its spectacular night scenery, all 3,580 local Scouts and 645 youths from Canada, Mongolia, Singapore, Australia, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Macau and Mainland China must have jolly and lingering memory of the event.

Hong Kong Scout Centenary Jamboree

To celebrate the centenary of Hong Kong Scouting, "Hong Kong Scout Centenary Jamboree" was successfully held from 27 December 2010 to 1 January 2011 at Penny's Bay, Lantau Island. This arrangement might match the starting year of Scouting Movement in Hong Kong in 1910 instead of 1911 as previous saying.

Organizing a Jamboree in Hong Kong is not easy and needs to overcome many obstacles, especially picking a suitable campsite. The first place that came up was not Penny's Bay but Wan Tsai Peninsula in Sai Kung and High Island Reservoir. The Organizing Committee eventually got the approval from the Lands Department to use the area where was reserved for the extension of Hong Kong Disneyland. The size of the camp site of Metrojam by four times.  The theme of the Jamboree was "March On to Another Century". More then 5,200 campers, including 4,400 local Scouts, 650 overseas Scouts and 150 youths from Mainland joined this Jamboree. Five sub-camps and 5 activity villages were set up in the camp site, as well as a huge Camp Arena.

Camping is the most typical Scout activity which is perfect to be chosen the kick-off event to celebrate the centenary of Hong Kong Scouting. Through camping, local Scouts had a chance to meet youths from Mainland and all over the world and to learn from each other.

For some of the campers, the most unforgettable memory of this Jamboree might be the beautiful camp site  or exciting camp activities. Or it might be the camping experience under severely cold weather and fireworks of the theme pack as a bonus show. for whatever reason, this was surely a very special Jamboree.
