SCOUT ART

The two ideas – “Scout” and “art” seem to be poles apart, the former conveys an impression of vitality while the latter gives us a sense of serenity. But in face they share a similarity – both of them are effective means for youth development and are closely related to each other.

The Artistic Elements of Scouting

Scouting is and undertaking for young people’s physical, intellectual, social, spiritual and aesthetic development. Among these virtues, aesthetics focuses on cultivating members’ interest in expressing themselves through arts, stimulating their creativity, instilling in them the abilities to enjoy pleasures of life and to appreciate carious forms of beauty. Art can act as spiritual inspiration and assist in the balanced growth of the left and right brain which enhances thinking skills. If we let young people grow up in the realms of arts education in time, as their life experiences accumulate, their ability to appreciate aesthetic qualities can be enhanced and it can help establish their own unique styles.

Scouts training and activities include rich artistic elements – themes of music, art, drama performances, handicraft, etc are included in the “Creativity” of the Cub Scout Adventure Award and the Cub Scout Adventure Crest Award; the Scout Proficiency Badges include Artist, Photographer, Musician, Craftsman badges, etc, which are aimed at cultivating members’ interest in arts. The element of art is also included in the syllabus of Progressive Badge in Venture Scout and Rover Scout sections requiring Scouts to develop their personal interest in art and share with friends. In addition, to enable Scout members to demonstrate their artistic talents, the Scout Association of Hong Kong organized a number of activities from time to time, including handicraft courses, design, photography and short film competitions.

The Artistic Talent of Lord Baden-Powell

Despite being a military man with a devotion to adventure activities, Lord Baden-Powell possessed a passion for art subjects like drama, music and painting, where his works of painting especially enjoyed phenomenal popularity.

He had developed a strong affection for painting since he was young. Though his family could not afford him to learn painting, instead of giving up, he tried his best to acquire the skills through self-learning. In order to establish the foundation of basic drawing techniques, he studied and copied great works of art and he also took reference from cave paintings on walls made by primitive people. After years of consistent practice, his techniques had been polished to an exquisite level. In fact, many of Lord Baden-Powell’s illustrations can be seen from his personal diaries, war diaries and the book Scouting for Boys which is often read by the Scouts. With extraordinary ability of observation and delicate techniques, each of his illustration creates a speaking likeness of its figures and portrays distinguished composition of the scenery, successfully complementing the plain texts with energy and vitality.
