In 2018, New Mexico voters elected a new governor to replace term-limited Gov. Susana Martinez (R). The election saw two US Representatives, Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) of NM-01 and Steve Pearce (R) of NM-02, compete for the top job. In November, Lujan Grisham was elected by 14.4%, handily defeating Pearce in the Democratic-leaning state. However, despite losing state-wide, Pearce was able to win his home district by 6.5%, fueled by his blow-out margins in Little Texas. Lujan Grisham did best in heavily Hispanic and Native American counties within the district, allowing her to keep the margin somewhat close. This, combined with winning the other two congressional districts (including her home district) by over 20 points, allowed for Lujan Grisham to prevail comfortably statewide. 

On September 6th, 2022, Griffin was removed from office by District Court Judge Francis J. Mathew for his role in the January 6th insurrection under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, marking the first time since 1869 said section was invoked.
