While Connecticut has been a fairly blue state for all the 21st century thus far, it used to be far more receptive to Republicans. One such instance was in Connecticut's 6th district, where incumbent Nancy Johnson, a moderate Republican, was continuously re-elected, only facing a close race in 1996. After Connecticut lost a seat in the House following the 2000 Census, Johnson was moved into the 5th district, where she was double-bunked with fellow incumbent James Maloney (D). After narrowly defeating Maloney in 2002, Johnson again ran for re-election in 2004, this time against future State Senator Terry Gerratana (D). Despite George W. Bush (R) narrowly losing the district to John Kerry (D) in the concurrent Presidential election, Johnson won by over 20 points, sweeping all but two towns. As a result of her victory, Johnson became the longest serving US Representative in Connecticut history. As of 2025, this is the last time Connecticut's 5th district elected a Republican representative, although it nearly did in 2022.
