2020 GA-14 Republican PRIMARY

With incredibly controversial firebrand Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-GA) departure from Congress at the beginning of this year, putting a (temporary?) end to her divisive political career, I'd like to look at when said career first began. Greene's opening in Georgia's 14th District came in 2020, when then-representative Tom Graves announced his retirement, opening the seat up to a competitive primary. 2022 GA-07 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY

The 2020 redistricting cycle saw it's fair share of gerrymandering, with one of the more notable examples being in Georgia. Following the 2020 elections, Republicans controlled eight districts while Democrats controlled six, but Republican legislators packed Democratic voters into five districts. With Governor Brian Kemp signing the maps into law, they ensured the 6th district (based around Atlanta's suburbs) would flip to the GOP while all other seats remained safe. As a result, GA-06's Representative, Lucy McBath (D), ended up running in the safely Democratic GA-07 against that district's Representative, Carolyn Bourdeaux (D).

Going into the primary, both Bourdeaux and McBath touted similar voting records and policy positions, resulting in the race focusing more on the candidates themselves. McBath capitalized on her national figure, as well as her serious funding advantage, with outside groups funnelling millions into ads favoring McBath.

However, despite the millions of dollars spent by outside groups in favor of McBath, Bourdeaux had one serious advantage: she was fighting on home turf. While Bourdeaux's home had been drawn into the 9th district by a few blocks, over 2/3rds of her former district was in the new GA-07, while only a small sliver of McBath's former district made it into the new one. Bourdeaux attempted to use this to her advantage, emphasizing her local connections to the district and trying to frame herself as the better advocate for local issues in Congress. However, in the end McBath's national figure and money won out, as she defeated Bourdeaux by over 30%. McBath won nearly everywhere, with Bourdeaux only seeing significant support in Peachtree Corners and a few smaller areas. Following the primary, McBath won the general election in the district before Georgia was forced to redraw their maps, which were found to be in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. After Georgia's new maps were allowed to go into effect for the 2024 elections, the 7th district was dismantled, resulting in McBath running once again in the now-safely Democratic GA-06. With litigation over Georgia's maps still underway, it remains to be seen if McBath will once again be forced to run in a new district.

2024 Supreme court election

This was the only contested GA Supreme Court election in 2024.

Pinson was endorsed by Republicans and Barrow by Democrats.

2024 Whitfield county sheriff election

2024 radically altered America's governance, as were Democrats swept out of power federally and across several localities. One such area was Whitfield County in northwestern Georgia, home to the city of Dalton. While Democrats had dominated Whitfield County during the early 20th century (although not overwhelmingly so), that began to change in the 1980s as the area, and Georgia as a whole, began rapidly shifting towards the GOP. Yet, as Democratic losses continued into the 21st century, they had a single bright spot on the local level: Scott Chitwood. Chitwood had been elected sheriff in 1992, back when the area was much friendlier to Democrats, and had managed to retain his office even as Whitfield County became more and more Republican. However, 2024 would be the end of Chitwood's luck, as he was defeated by fellow officer Darren Pierce by 8%. Yet, despite his loss, Chitwood had a 36% overperformance compared to Harris, who lost the county by 44% on the same ballot. Given Whitfield County's strong Republican lean, Chitwood will likely be the County's last Democratic sheriff for a long time.
