2014 proved to be a good year for Delaware Republicans as part of a nation-wide Red Wave. In addition to getting their first non-incumbent win statewide since 1994 with Ken Simpler's victory in the Treasurers race, incumbent State Auditor Tom Wagner (R) won re-election to a seventh term in office. In what was described as a "hard-fought race", Wagner faced attorney Brenda Mayrack (D). Mayrack, boosted by stronger fundraising, attempted to portray Wagner as "past his sell-by date", while Wagner responded by questioning Mayrack's ability to act independently. Yet, despite Mayrack's advantage in cash, Wagner ultimately came out on top, winning by 8.4%.  Wagner's strength came from rural southern Delaware and the Wilmington suburbs, which Mayrack's margin in Wilmington wasn't able to counteract. Following his victory, Wagner said "We've had some tough times and we've had some tough years, but for all the Democrats out there, more importantly for all of the taxpayers in the state, the Republican Party is alive and well in Delaware,". Yet, 2014 would prove to be the last time Delaware Republicans were well, as this (along with the concurrent Treasurer election) is the last time a Republican won state-wide. Wagner retired in 2018 due to health problems, being succeeded by Kathy McGuiness (D), while his fellow Republican incumbent, Treasurer Ken Simpler, lost re-election that same year. While the Delaware GOP certainly isn't dead, given their performance in 2022, it may be a while before another Republican accomplishes what Wagner (and Simpler) did and win statewide.
