After losing Kansas' gubernatorial election in 2018 and the GOP primary for US Senate in 2020, former Secretary of State Kris Kobach launched his third comeback bid in 2022, this time running for Kansas' attorney general. However, Kobach faced opposition from State Senator Kellie Warren and former federal prosecutor Tony Mattivi. Each campaign had a distinct message, with Kobach running as anti-establishment conservative, Warren running
on a platform of electability with the support of several interest groups, and Mattivi running as the only Republican who would not “embarrass our state." Ultimately, Kobach's name recognition from his previous runs and the loyalty of conservatives allowed him to prevail with a relatively narrow plurality against Warren.
On the same day as Kobach's nomination, Democrats nominated former prosecutor and police officer Chris Mann of Lawrence. Mann had never run for office before and used that to portray the contest as being between "a politician and a public servant", criticizing Kobach as being too focused on generating headlines than helping average Kansans. Kobach, meanwhile, ran a firebrand campaign, promising to regularly sue the Biden administration for various policies.
