In recent years, the GOP has become notorious for losing winnable races by nominating scandal-plagued firebrands, especially in the Senate. However, Republicans "voting for the craziest son of a bitch in the race," (to quote Rep. Thomas Massie, R-KY) is not unique to Senate races. Indeed, one of the wildest candidates to win a Republican primary in recent years is Aria Dimezzo, a self-described "transsexual anarchist Satanist" who received the GOP nomination for Sheriff in Cheshire County. Dimezzo recieved the GOP nomination after entering at the last minute, as running as a Libertarian (her prefered party) would've required gathering signatures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following her nomination, Dimezzo faced incumbent sheriff Eli Rivera, who has held the office since 2012. Despite running as a Republican, Dimezzo's platform included rooting out systemic issues with the police and "ending the drug war."
However, her campaign was defined by the main plank of her campaign: being an anti-police candidate, with the campaign slogan "F THE POLICE" and calling for the sheriff's department to "police the police." Dimezzo's campaign prompted a write-in campaign from Earl Nelson (R), who had previously run against Rivera several times. Sadly, Dimezzo was subject to hateful vandalism, with a homophobic slur spray-painted on her car. Rivera, meanwhile, ran a more positive campaign, letting the two Republicans fight it out.
In the end, Rivera won in a landslide, securing 68.1% of the vote, even as Joe Biden (D) won 57.5% of the vote on the top of the ticket. Republicans were sharply split between Dimezzo and Nelson, with the former edging out the latter for 2nd place by only 8%. Following the election, Rivera was re-elected in 2022 and 2024, while Dimezzo ran unsucessfully for the New Hampshire state house in 2022 before being sentenced to 18 months in prison for an illegal crypto business in 2023.
While the expected presidential rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump did not come to fruition due to the former exiting the race, plenty of down-ballot contests saw rematches between candidates. One such contest was the race for Cheshire County Sheriff, where incumbent Eli Rivera (D) was once again challenged by his 2022 opponent, Richard Pratt (R).
