Like most of Maryland's eastern shore, Dorchester County is staunchly conservative, having voted Republican in every election since 1996. Most recently, Dorchester voted for Donald Trump (R) by 14.5%, with US Senate candidate Larry Hogan (R) and MD-01 Congressman Andy Harris (R) winning by even larger margins. However, while Dorchester may shun federal Democrats, local Dems have had a bit more success, as seen in 2022. In that election, Dorchester County's incumbent Register of Wills, Teresa Dayton Wheatley (D), ran for a full term after being appointed two years prior when the previous incumbent, Doris Keene Lewis (D)*, passed away. In the general election, Wheatley defeated challenger Carla Spear (R) by 7.8%, even as Democratic gubernatorial nominee Wes Moore lost the county by 14.5%. However, it is worth noting that, despite Registers having a political affiliation, the position itself is fairly apolitical, making it rare for incumbents to be unseated (although it happened in 2010, due to ethical concerns, and again in 2022). Wheatley did best around Cambridge and Vienna, while Spear did best in the southern and northeastern parts of the county.
