While split-ticket voting has seen a sharp decline in recent decades, there were a few stragglers who managed to hold seats for their party for far longer than expected. Probably the two most notable are former Senators Jon Tester (D) and Joe Manchin (D/I) from Montana and West Virginia respectively, who only left office in January 2025, or Senator Susan Collins (R) of Maine, who was re-elected in 2020. Yet, the Senate is not the only chamber which saw such stragglers, with a notable example in the House being Collin Peterson (D) of Minnesota's 7th Congressional District.

Yet, on the same ticket where residents of MN-07 re-elected Peterson, they overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump (R), who carried the district by over 30%. Hillary Clinton, Peterson's fellow Democrat, saw nowhere near the same amount of support, failing to carry a single county in the district (although she did narrowly win the state as a whole).
