2006 saw a blue wave roll across the nation, and Tennessee proved no different. 

As of 2025, this is the last time a Democrat carried Hancock County (or any county in the district), the last time a Republican received less than 70% of the vote, and the last time a Democrat received over 25% of the vote. Additionally, this is the best Democratic performance in this district during the 21st century, and the best since 1976.

In 2006, Blue Dog Congressman John Tanner (D) won reelection to represent western Tennessee's 8th congressional district. Tanner hadn't faced a tough election since winning his seat in 1988, and '06 proved to be no different, as he dispatched challenger John Farmer (R) with over 70% of the vote. Tanner's victory came as the district continued to shift further to the right, having voted for George Bush by 6-points in 2004 after backing Al Gore at the beginning of the decade. While his conservative voting record, down-ballot lag/incumbency, and a favorable environment helped Tanner keep his seat, change was fast approaching. After being uncontested in 2008, despite the GOP winning the district by 13% in the concurrent presidential election, Tanner opted to retire rather than face a tough election in 2010, with his seat flipping in a landslide*. As such, this marks the last time a Democrat won a contested election (and received >40% of the vote) in this district.
