After being elected, Ravnsborg's tenure was upended in 2020 when he hit and killed a pedestrian, Joe Boever, while driving on U.S. Highway 14. Questions surrounding Ravnsborg's conduct during the subsequent investigation led to Ravnsborg being impeached, convicted, and removed from office for the crimes related to Boevers death and malfeasance of office, with Ravnsborg being barred from holding future office. Mark Vargo (R), Pennington County State’s Attorney and lead prosecutor in Ravnsborg's impeachment, was appointed to serve the remainder of the term.
