Order of operations tells us the right steps to follow when solving a math expression.
Use the rule: PEMDAS
Parentheses
Exponents
M/D Multiply and Divide (left to right)
A/S Add and Subtract (left to right)
In the problem:
5 + 3 × (2 + 1)
Step 1: Parentheses → (2 + 1) = 3
Step 2: Multiply → 3 × 3 = 9
Step 3: Add → 5 + 9 = 14
Following the order makes sure everyone gets the same answer — just like a recipe.
