Rounding means making a number simpler — but keeping it close to the original.
When we round, we make a number easier to work with.
We often round to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand.
Use this rhyme when rounding:
If it’s five or more, round up the score.
If it’s four or less, let it rest.
This helps you remember what to do with the digit you're rounding to.
Let’s round 47 to the nearest ten.
Look at the digit in the ones place → it's 7.
Since 7 is more than 5, we round up the 4 in the tens place.
So:
47 rounds to 50
Round 132 to the nearest hundred.
Look at the digit in the tens place → it's 3.
Since 3 is less than 5, we let it rest — no change.
So:
132 rounds to 100
Rounding helps you:

Simplify big numbers in your head
Make shopping and measuring easier
We use rounding in real life when prices are tricky, when measuring long distances, or when checking answers.
