Integers are all whole numbers and their opposites.
Negative rational numbers include decimals and fractions below zero.

Zero is the middle.
To the left are negatives (–1, –2, –3),
To the right are positives (+1, +2, +3).

A temperature of –5 degrees is colder than 0.
A debt of –3 dollars means you owe 3 dollars.
