In math, we use operations to work with numbers.
The two most important operations in Grade 1 are:
➕ Addition — putting numbers together
➖ Subtraction — taking numbers away
These are the first tools we use to solve problems in math!
Addition means we are putting two or more groups together to find the total.
🧠 We use the plus sign + to show addition.
💡 Example:
You have 3 apples 🍎
You get 2 more 🍎🍎
Total: 3 + 2 = 5
🧩 That’s addition! We’re joining numbers to make a bigger number.
Subtraction means we are taking away from a group.
🧠 We use the minus sign – to show subtraction.
💡 Example:
You have 5 bananas 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌
You give away 2 🍌🍌
What’s left? 5 – 2 = 3
🧩 That’s subtraction! We are removing part of the group.
Addition and subtraction help us:
Count things in the real world
Share and give fairly
Solve story problems
Understand how numbers change
We use them every day — at the store, at home, at school!
