Place value means the value of a digit depends on where it is in the number.
In Grade 1, we focus on two places:
🟩 Tens place (groups of ten)
🟨 Ones place (leftover ones)
Each digit has a job. Its place tells us how much it’s worth.
Let’s look at the number 42:
The 4 is in the tens place → 4 tens = 40
The 2 is in the ones place → 2 ones = 2
So:
➡️ 42 = 40 + 2
We’re saying: "Four tens and two ones."
Place value helps us:
Read and write numbers correctly
Break numbers into parts (tens and ones)
Add and subtract more easily
Understand how numbers grow
It also helps in word problems, counting money, and telling time!
Example 1:
Number: 36
3 tens = 30
6 ones = 6
✅ 36 = 30 + 6
Example 2:
Number: 19
1 ten = 10
9 ones = 9
✅ 19 = 10 + 9
Example 3:
Number: 70
7 tens = 70
0 ones = 0
✅ 70 = 70 + 0
Steps to follow:
Look at the number (like 64)
The left digit is the tens place
The right digit is the ones place
Example: 64
6 is in the tens place → 60
4 is in the ones place → 4
✅ 64 = 60 + 4
