In the afternoon, the students went to nearby Ungurpils to meet people of various professions, and visited Ungurpils Starch factory ‘Starkelsen’, fruit and berries growers' farm- manufacturers of candies and marmalades, where students could taste different autumn berries as well as teas and jams from different berries.
Attending Ungurpils Starch factory ALOJA -StTARKELSEN
Project participants visited Ungurpils Starch factory ‘Aloja -Starkelsen’ where students were introduced to the potato starch production process, from the supply of potatoes from the potato farmers- potato growers to the starch packing.
ALOJA-STARKELSEN was founded in June 1991 as the first Latvian food company with foreign capital. ALOJA-STARKELSEN is located in the northern part of Latvia, near the town of Aloja.
ALOJA-STARKELSEN largest stakeholder is the 'Sveriges Stärkelseproducenter Group' with their headquarters based in Kristianstad, Sweden.
Over the years ALOJA-STARKELSEN has become the biggest potato starch producer in the Baltic States and one of the leading organic potato starch producer in the World.
ALOJA-STARKELSEN also produces a wide range of other food products like gelatin dessert, fruit jelly, baking powder, vanilla sugar, DIP sauces and much more.
The factory is currently employing 80 staff members and the company's annual turnover is 8 million EUR.
Approximately 80% of the production is exported to other European Union countries and the United States of America.
Business Support Centre - Library SALA is situated on the banks of Lake Ungurpils.
The building was built within the framework of the project 'Development of Sustainable Buildings, Renewable Energy Technologies and Innovative Emission Reduction Technologies'.
It has been built to low energy building standards using environmentally friendly building materials during the construction process. The energy for heating the building is provided by renewable energy technologies - deep-hole heat pump, solar power plant and solar collectors.
With the construction of the SALA, the business support infrastructure was created in the region, which is used for the development of existing and new enterprises and for the activation of the local community.
Ungurpils Mill Lake
Participants from Romania, Spain and Estonia had a great time at the picturesque Ungurpils mill lake, which is a unique natural heritage - it has floating islands - overgrown with grass, shrubs and trees, sometimes elevated, with rafts of land passing through the lake.
Clay and muddy Ungurpils lake is a national protected object. It is 65 meters above sea level, its length is 1.75 km, its width is about 0.3 km and its depth is 3.2 meters. The coasts are difficult to access.
Students could visit the Environmental Object a 'Wheelchair - Science Class '- a wooden track with exploratory platforms - stretching 345 meters along Ungurpils Lake. Each platform is equipped with an information stand where you can learn about the history of Ungurpils, Dzirnavezers, park trees and shrubs. At the end of a wooden footbridge, everyone can test their knowledge along the route.
Excursion to the berry and fruit grower and manufacturer of candies and marmalades
The trip continued with attending the fruit and berries growers farm- manufacturers of candies and marmalades, where students could taste different autumn berries as well as teas and jams from different berries.
In the evening students went going by a raft on the river Salaca with their host families, they enjoyed the nature of Latvia, beautiful banks of the River Salaca. And later they went to the youth club and played games and just talked to get know each other better.
