Post OG, I headed to Colorado to pursue all of my outdoor recreation endeavors and even managed to pick up a degree along the way (BA Philosophy CU Boulder). During those most formative years I met and eventually married my college sweetheart, Terry Leahy. We both worked menial jobs after college for a couple of years to earn enough money for the two of us to spend the year of 1978 traveling around world aimlessly with purpose, similar to “On The Road” adventures with Dean Moriarty, but with an international flavor and the added element of a heightened degree of danger. Returning on the plane from our year- long travels, they were showing the movie “Saturday Night Fever” and we both wondered what the hell had happened to America while we were gone?
After returning and settling back in, getting another degree sounded like a good idea for some reason, so I went to the University of Denver and picked up my MBA in Finance and Marketing. Then the Denver corporate years ensued with gigs at Price Waterhouse Coopers, Citibank, and Home Box Office, and Liberty Media Group over the course of the next 20 years. Enoooough! I finally wised up and started my own real estate company in Aspen offering rental and sales brokerage services as well as real estate investment advisory services. I actually like the work enough that I am still doing it today (and I like the $$$).
Terry and I have 2 children (Kevin in Phoenix and Kelly in Denver) and 4 grandchildren. We are in Phoenix 3 months of the year and Denver for the rest. Marrying an Irish Catholic girl from another large family caused a great deal of confusion for my kids, having 2 uncle Michaels, 2 uncle Kevin’s, and 2 uncle Patrick’s from the union of our families. My kids decided that there were enough of these names in the family and deviated dramatically by naming their kids Torin, Liam, Olivia and Ainsley.
As I mentioned, outdoor recreation was a big driver for me to head West to Colorado. Still is. Skiing, Cycling (century rides), Tennis (still playing on a competitive tennis team I started 30 years ago), hiking and climbing (I have completed climbing all of Colorado’s 14,000 ft peaks (55 of them) and many of the 13ers), and even a little golf now and then. Oh, I forgot to mention I survived a heart attack (actually flat lined) 9 years ago which helped me realize how great this gift of life truly is. Feel free to ask me if I “saw the light” while I was out.
Looking forward to hearing everyone’s stories in September and creating some new memories with all of you!
