My Bandages | Etching and Aquatint | 8 × 10
Artist's note
The artwork titled ‘My Bandages’ is one of the early works where I talk about my personal experiences. As the word bandage suggests “a piece of material that is used to tie around a wound”, here I use it as a metaphor. It is not a physical wound that I aim to cover but the feelings of gender dysphoria. Dysphoria is a state of feeling uneasiness due to discomfort of a difference between a person’s biological sex and their gender identity. The technique used here is etching and aquatint. There is subtle burnishing around the edges of the figure to separate it from the background with the aim of giving the figure more importance. There is no involvement of colour in order to maintain the focus at the bandages that are skilfully given its form. The representation of beyond the binaries is the conversation that I want to be initiated.
