It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our exhibition, "Nabha Sprash – Indian Women Printmakers." This exhibition is a celebration of the creativity and achievements of Indian women in the field of printmaking. "Nabha Sparsha," meaning "to touch the sky," symbolizes the philosophy of empowerment and emancipation, providing a vital platform for women to express their identities and make their creative voices heard.
As we delve into the exhibition, we encounter the technical and artistic prowess of Indian Women Printmakers. The featured works present bold themes, intricate lines, and diverse techniques that push the boundaries of the medium. Each composition is a narrative, drawing from personal memories and addressing significant social issues. Printmaking serves as a powerful medium to challenge gender stereotypes, portraying individuals in varied roles and contexts, irrespective of gender.
The exhibition showcases the printmaking journey, exploring themes of abstraction and human expression through both monochromatic and vibrant color prints. The techniques on display ranging from aquatint and etching to lithographs, woodcuts, and screen printing highlight the versatility and depth of printmaking. We are honoured to present artworks from the prestigious collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), complimented by contemporary works from emerging artists selected through a rigorous open call and jury process. This initiative marks a significant milestone in NGMA's history, democratizing art and offering a gender-inclusive perspective.
"Nabha Sprash" is a testament to NGMA's commitment to fostering creativity and building a lasting legacy for future generations. It represents a bold step towards breaking barriers and empowering women artists to soar to new heights.
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the family of the eminent printmaker, the late Gogi Saroj Pal, for lending her prints to this exhibition and sharing images to create a memory wall in her honour. This tribute acknowledges her extensive contributions to art, where she portrayed women in various forums and expressed herself through her creative representations.
I invite you to engage deeply with each print, appreciating the beauty and significance of the stories they tell. May this exhibition leave you feeling inspired and empowered.
Let us celebrate the indomitable spirit of Womanhood!
