Women and Printmaking in India

“The art of printmaking plays a very distinct role in the contemporary art scene of India.” a statement that very well describes the 257 entries sent by women printmakers by an open call across India for the insightful exhibition on women printmakers, organized by the National Gallery of Modern Art. I am humbled to have had the opportunity to witness these works of art as one of the jury members of the selection committee.
This exhibition is one of the rare occasions where prints created by women artists are displayed and celebrated, highlighting their role in the contemporary art scene in India. It gives me immense happiness and pleasure to see that the contemporary printmaking scene is still so alive and vibrant.
In the process of selection, most of the submitted works demonstrated a wonderful angle of passion and dedication towards printmaking, a process that requires a lot of patience, skill, and dedication. It is fascinating to see the existence of different techniques in printmaking, and we have tried our best to do justice in that direction.
All the submitted works were of very good quality, but still, some excelled over others. It was not easy to process and make the selection, but we have tried to ensure that the exhibition displays a cohesive amalgamation of concept and skill.
I congratulate the Director General of NGMA, Shri Sanjeev Kishor Goutam, for coming up with this unique concept of exhibition on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
Thank You.
