What an eventful day we had!
Today in Science, our Chemistry unit had us learning about the mixing of different chemicals and their reactions. We mixed baking soda and vinegar and made a gas form! Then we mixed a variety of things like: hydrogen peroxide, food coloring, dish soap, yeast and made...Elephant Toothpaste! It oozed out of the bottle and created a fun sight to see. Then we headed outside to watch a volcano erupt! Mrs. Rivera added Mentos to a bottle of soda and it erupted. Mixing different chemicals (safely) makes for great science demonstrations.
In History, we learned all about how the Transcontinental Railroad was built. Did you know that it was a contest to see which side would finish first? One side began building east in Sacramento, CA and the other built westward from Omaha, Nebraska, and they met up in Promontory Summit, Utah. Thousands of Chinese immigrants helped to build it and they were met with many difficulties along the way: extreme heat and cold, angry Native Americans, necessary dynamite explosions (to go through the mountains) which killed many, the need to build bridges and cross mountains, and much more. We "built" some of our own train track by playing with "Ticket to Ride" game.
In IEW, we learned more about nouns and verbs and made our own sentences. We did an activity where we separated a person, place, or thing. We will work more on sentence building next week.
