Career Day/Spirit Day was awesome!
What a blessing to have learned so much from such wise, hard working people. Many thanks to the parents who came out to share their careers with the student body.
Our day began with a chapel service, where Mrs. Aguero reminded us how we can have a fruitful Lenten season: We should be exercising the discipline of trying to be the best Christian we can be: by reading scripture, praying, sacrifice, good actions. Jesus did so much for us, we can do something for Him.
We enjoyed listening to firefighters who showed us their gear and answered our questions about their job. It was raining, or we would have had the chance to see their firetruck. We learned what it's like to work as a nurse at a USC hospital, where they do organ transplants. What beautiful life-saving work they do! We also listened to one of our own teachers, Mrs. Dichosa, who shared with us about the beautiful Christian non-profit organization she helps to run in Kenya. After that we listened to another nurse practitioner who helps children to feel better. She prays before work each day that she can do the best job she can. In between it all we were able to enjoy a mini-play performed by Ms. James' class. They showed us what it was like to be a child laborer and how unfair it was. A famous photographer highlighted that sad practice, and by his work, was able to make a law forbidding it from happening ever again.
At the end of our day we got to see what it's like to be a real estate appraiser and realtor from Mrs. Rivera's husband Gil Rivera! Mr. Rivera showed us a measuring wheel, and explained how he enjoys owning his own business. SellYourCasa is the name of his business and it tells people that he speaks Spanish as well. He showed us some cool, unusual houses that people live in.
We also managed to squeeze in some History in our day and we learned about the famous athlete Jim Thorpe, the first Native American to win a gold medal in the Olympics for the US. Thorpe was the best athlete of the first half of the 20th century, winning medals in the pentathlon and the decathlon. He did this wearing two shoes that he found in a dumpster because someone stole his! We love learning about people who have overcome some kind of adversity.
I loved the careers that my students dressed up for. So creative! All in all it was a great day.
