Oh what fun it is to....
Learn about the transmission of sound! Today we learned about how sound can travel along a string to get to our ears through a cup! We talked to our friends with string telephones, felt the vibration of our voice along the string, and were amazed at how the speaker Mrs. Rivera made (using a wrapping paper tube and cups taped at the end) actually made the music on her phone louder. Sound travels in waves and can be exciting to learn about!
Panning for gold was the highlight of the day! We learned about how the 49ers all made history with their long treks across or around the US by ship to find gold for themselves. Many struck it rich, and many went home defeated that they didn't make their riches in the Gold Rush. Even the men who sold the mining equipment made it rich, taking advantage of all those who hoped to make a fortune. Did you know there was a 12 pound nugget found?? Not really, but the Wilson family played a trick on many of the miners when their 12lb baby boy was born. Everyone traveled far and wide to see this 12lb "nugget", born on Christmas Day, only to go in their house to find it was a BABY! Some of the men traveled 10 miles to see him! Wow, were they surprised! Not too many were upset, though, because it was a treat to actually see a baby, as many men had left their families behind, and hadn't seen a baby in over a year. We learned how to pan for our own "Gold" and went home with our own nuggets.
Emmanuel, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Holy One...we sang the song (by Amy Grant) about all the special names given to Jesus in the bible verse from Isaiah 9:6.
For writing, we traced and wrote special Christmas words in a little booklet, and they took it home to finish coloring it.
We look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas program next Friday evening.
