Happy New Year!!
I'm hoping all my families had a blessed Christmas: time with family and time with our Lord to celebrate His birth.
I just love new beginnings!
Our class got off to a great start to the new year. We had one of the rainiest days this season, but everyone arrived safely, and they were ready to learn.
In Science, we introduced the topic of Chemistry! We began with Mixtures: two or more substances that are not chemically united and that exist in no fixed proportion to each other...meaning, that when you combine them, you can un-mix them, and they are still the same substance. We combined water and gravel and saw that they were still the same. Then we saw that when baby powder and water are mixed, if you use a coffee filter, you can filter out the baby powder! We saw that when you add cereal to milk, you can still see how they separate. Then we mixed the yummy snack of Oreos, saltines, and croutons and everyone got to enjoy what they wanted for snack time.
In History, we learned all about the part of History that is sad to learn, but needed to be shared: Slavery. We learned all about Sojourner Truth (did you know her real name was Isabella?) and her fight for the rights of fellow slaves to be free. Then we learned all about the Underground Railroad and all Harriet Tubman did to help free slaves after she was freed. It's believed over 100,000 slaves were aided! We did our own version of the Underground Railroad and "hid" in various places (see photos) with guidance from our own Harriet Tubman (me), and we made it to the Northern states to freedom!
In IEW, we read a new story, orally summarized it, and practiced writing it all down, along with an illustration.
Look for all new announcements, field trips, and fundraisers to help make Branches the best it can be!
