TERM 2
Equipping students with sensemaking is one of the 7 education shifts (Minister Chan, 2022). Academic sensemaking encourages students to bridge prior and new knowledge. However, in Middle Primary Social Studies, this becomes challenging due to the relatively weaker inference skills of decoding primary and secondary information sources. Reciprocal Teaching (RT) strategy was employed in a collaborative approach to scaffold the students’ inference skills. Through the four distinct strategies (predict-question-clarify-summarise) in RT, students developed their ability to interpret the information and evidence gathered to support an inquiry. Participants will take away ideas on how they can adapt RT for use in the Middle and Upper Primary Social Studies lessons to build students’ inference skills for better sensemaking.
