Writing a picture composition is a new component for Primary 3 students. Based on observation, students are unable to expand their ideas beyond what they see in the given picture. Students also have limited ideas and they tend to only form sentences based on the helping words given in the question paper. Therefore, an acronym ‘BKEMAS’ was introduced to the students and the findings prove that there is an improvement in their brainstorming skills to produce new useful words for their writing. Teachers in the project team also adopted Differentiated Instruction strategy to engage the students in writing a better quality composition.

From the project team's observation, it is obvious that Malay Language speaking students lack the interest in reading Malay storybooks and magazines. They find some of the books too difficult to comprehend. This is the result of limited vocabulary knowledge as they are not exposed to reading Malay books. The team selected "The Reading for Pleasure Pedagogy" as their project which encompasses four specific practices: reading aloud, social reading environments, book talk and recommendations, and independent reading. Combined in different patterns and made real through the action and continual reflection on the part of the teachers, the team hopes that these practices will contribute to the development of communities of readers in their school.
