TERM 4
Inquiry-based learning (IBL) helps students in their own inquiry learning. The 5E learning cycle of IBL - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate - is used to craft new learning experiences that meet the needs of our Secondary 1 Malay Language (ML) students, which are made possible with e-pedagogy and Augmented Reality, in the writing of the proverbial narrative essay. IBL is characterized by the forms of scaffolding and a culture of questioning. Data collected at each step of the 5E cycle and feedback from the students determined the power of IBL. Analysis shows that IBL develops students’ research skills through classroom and online activities.

One of the roles of a Mother Tongue Language (MTL) teacher is to develop learners who can communicate effectively in the target language, and to create an environment that allows learners to question stereotypes, norms, and perspectives; and to provide opportunities for critical reflection. Other than the bilingual approach to MTL teaching, four relevant approaches will be introduced in this workshop on how to bring about active engagement and application of learning in achieving the broad objectives of the 21st Century. The approaches are Task-Based, Dialogic Teaching, Collaborative Learning, and Experiential Learning.
