A unique classification of mage that developed during the Magefolk Wars, Anchor Mages are mages that hold together an area's magic and channel it for a specific purpose. During the Mage War, anchor mages used the collective magic of fleeing mages to create floating refuges off the Iksandi coast and elsewhere. Culturally, they adopt or are given a new name when they become anchor mages, abandoning all sense of self.
Luminary was an Ignidus mage who anchored the island of Stronghold. Before she became an anchor, she was active on the front lines of the mages, and one of few mages in her group who did not succumb to weeping fever. The few who saw her after she became an anchor described her as glowing, with skin that burned like the sun and a face hidden by a veil because of its brightness. She confined herself to the center of her island, surrounded by a stone circle that only select mages could pass. Her closest companion during this time was Tirian, an Ignidus mage with immunity to burning.
Adamant was a Telan mage who anchored the island of Refuge. He was the first mage to become an anchor, raising the island from the sea from the refugee ship Chance. The ship is still anchored at the top of the island, and it is one of the few islands that still remain. He was slowly petrified by his position as an anchor, his body becoming opal as he held the island. It is believed that he is still alive at the heart of the island, forever watching from his ship on the mountain.
Endurance was a Kiroko mage who anchored the island of Freedom. She, and her island, were unstable after the anchoring, as she struggled to control the weight of her magic. She was chained by her friends to the center of the island, turned into a troll-like beast who lashed out at anyone who passed. She drove herself into madness with the weight of too many mages and sank the island, though most of the mages escaped.
Abyss was an Amodoi mage
Majesty was a Pyrsi mage who anchored the island of Sanctuary, the largest island of all the sea forts. She was the oldest known anchor mage at the time of island formation, most able to handle the weight of magic. She was turned into a blue dragon-like creature, still fully capable of wise thought, but utterly inhuman. Her island lasted long after the mage wars, shrouded in mystery and inaccessible to all but the most lost or the most determined.
