Audhyll is the largest nation in Hylden, and is the most well known. It has close ties with the lands of Siana and Civiel through trade.
The Audhyllic government is split between six lords and ladies, inherited by the eldest child of the previous lord or lady. Every ten years, a monarch is elected from this group of people. There is no limit to the number of times a person could be elected. The votes come from the twelve major cities, and during the election time, there is a mass pilgrimage to one of these cities. The current queen is Lady Mersdottir, who has held the position for three cycles. She is 52 years old, and will be expected to retire before the next cycle, leaving her eldest son, Josef Merson, to inherit the title of lord. The capitol city of Audhyl is Molyn, a large coastal city on the southwestern coast.
In a typical Audhyllic family, the mother is the head of the people in the household, while the father is the head of the house structure itself. Mothers and grandmothers take a role in organizing other family members,
Gender roles in Audhyll follow the idea of men and women holding different roles in the cycle of life. Women are associated with beginnings, ends (following an ancient custom of women being the planners of funerals and inheritors, and the personification of peaceful death being female), and in-betweens; while men are associated with stability and constant, as they don't have the same capacity for change and creation as women. As such, women are traditionally seen as having knowledge of the mind, magic, and inner workings, while men are often seen as having more knowledge over the visible, material workings of the world. This results in a workforce that is generally skewed towards women in roles such as healing, mathematics, and sciences.
Most buildings are wooden with stone foundations, and have shingled roofs made of wood and bark. Gettenskir, or roof guardians, shaped like wyverns or birds, are common in many houses. The roofs, especially in more isolated houses or smaller towns, have large overhangs for extra storage and shade during the summer, and are often used as a place to keep animals. The doorways are often carved with runes and images of bears called Hadenskir, or door guards. The doors are also covered with a curtain on the inside as a layer of extra insulation.
Audhyllic clothing is warm and layered. Men typically wear cotton shirts and socks, with knitted sweaters and wool pants held up by suspenders. Women typically wear layered skirts that reach to the ankles made of cotton or wool, held up by suspenders that cross in the back. Both traditional forms of clothing include a large wool coat worn in the winter that reaches down past the knees. Summerwear includes shorter and lighter shirts, with cotton pants and skirts without layers. Crossdressing is common and widely accepted besides in a few rare Oritavir sects. Some clothing colors are traditionally gendered in Audhyll, such as the color green, symbolising nature and stability, being for boys and the color red, symbolizing passion and change, for girls.
Audhyllic cuisine is known for cheese and meat. There are a variety of domesticated animals in Audhyll, such as sheep, goats, and reindeer. The coasts of Audhyll also have a variety of fish, and fish is an important part of coastal cuisine. Common Audhyllic dishes include jadsenki, reindeer meat served with goat cheese and mushrooms; geisekrot, sheep meat cooked in milk and served with berries; and Friggensav, a stew made from goat meat mixed with herbs and potatoes.
People from Audhyll are known as Audhyllic. Most of the population is Audhyllic vityr, although there is a stable population of Dyarsic vityr. There is a large minority of elves, mostly Sianic and Civielite. The Faenlic diaspora is the largest ethnic group, children of refugees from the Iksandi invasion.
The main Audhyllic religion is Oritavir, a polytheistic religion that focuses on the passage of seasons and the cycle of life. There is a stable Avonistic sect, as well as a Caigfei coven.
