Gechren is a society of interconnected families. The society is militaristic, and all the families are closely knit.
Gechrenic people are matriarchial, with the head of the house being the Enar, or grandmother. Husbands typically move into the home of their wife during the winter, and return to their mother during the summer. When a woman's daughter is full grown, she builds her own house near the mother's house and starts her own family, with the exception of the firstborn and secondborn daughter, who will stay with her mother for her entire life. There are ten major clans, and during times of war, they will all group together.
The clans have a history of fighting with each other over scarce resources, but as time progresses more clans have allied with eachother, effectively forming two great clans: Bear and Wolf. The clans are always at odds with each other. Wolf clan is traditionally more communal and focused on aiding others, while Bear clan focuses on individual strength.
Gechren is a matriarchial culture and favors older women. The oldest woman in a given family wears a veil that covers her face, and they only reveal their faces to their daughters, husband, and matriarchs of the same clan. Everyone in the family learns to fight with their clan's preferred weapon. The men are considered distance hunters, and leave home more often to hunt for food and defend ancestral lands, and the women guard the home and their matriarch.
Gechrenic architecture is made of wood, with more wealthy houses being built out of stone. The wood is covered with plaster and paint. Most roofs are hip roofs or combination hip and gable roofs. Houses are mostly one story tall, and have a row of arches around the outer wall, creating a covered passageway, often used for cooking and keeping animals during the summer. Arches often are in the shape of horseshoe arches or pointed arches, depending on the area. Gechrenic clothing is warm and comfortable, with thick fur coats and gloves, and hide pants lined with wool. The boots are made of hide and lined with rabbit or squirrel skin. The most defining feature is the headcloth they wear, wrapped and tied based on status. Matriarchs wear full veils with a slit for the eyes, mothers wear scarves wrapped around their heads and shoulders, men wear veils over their nose and mouth, and children wear the veil tied behind their head. These veils are worn when in the presence of those outside your household, with the exception of the matriarch, who wears her veil whenever in the presence of anyone besides her daughters and husband. Gechrenic cuisine relies mainly on root vegetables and meats, as well as foraged foods. Many houses have their own gardens. Most people raise pigs, rabbits or chickens, and some raise sheep and goats. A mixture of rye and wheat is used to make bread. The most common meals are Hasikunen, or rabbit bread, made from rabbit meat and vegetables wrapped in dough and cooked over an open flame; and Svensak, fried eggs mixed with pork and cut vegetables.
People from Gechren are called Gechrenic, and most of the population is Vityr. Due to the strong emphasis on family, non-vityr living in Gechren are rare. The Gechrenic religion, Lenvish, is dualistic, with a strong emphasis on feminine and masculine.
