Seeding Criteria and Process
1. All Coaches will use the Region seeding formula (on the chart on page 4) to determine seeding points for their wrestlers. Understand the primary purpose of seeding points is to establish a starting point for the seeding process. It does not override head to head or known talent results. Seeding points can be affected by disparity in team schedules, injuries, illness, weather, or a wrestler in a fall sport which makes the playoffs. Wrestlers should not be penalized in these situations with lower seeds.
2. Coaches will enter their teams’ rosters and seeding criteria/ points into trackwrestling via import link. Once all rosters are in the head-to-head selection will be opened for coaches and you will have until allotted before the seeding meeting to make selections. It is the coaches’ responsibility to enter his/her Head-to-head wins…
3. Designate “known talent” before any seeding is completed. “Known talent” criteria are defined below on page 2. These criteria should be listed in the wrestlers detail at the bottom of the seeding tab in trackwrestling.
4. List wrestlers entered at a weight in order by seeding points. All wrestlers will be seeded in the bracket. If there are more than 8 wrestlers, draw the 9th wrestler into spots 9-16. See notes on dealing with byes and drawing in wrestlers on page 2.
5. Adjust list based on clear head-to-head victories at official VHSL events of the current season only. If wrestlers have hit multiple times during the current season - the most recent victory will be used as the determining factor.
6. Adjust list based on “known talent”. See “known talent” notes on page 2.
7. If ties exist or the seed has not been determined by points, head to head, or known talent, then adjust the list based on “common opponents” at official VHSL events of the current season only.
8. If ties still exist or the seed was not able to be determined by the criteria above the head coaches of each team will cast a vote to determine the seed of the wrestler.
9. The host school will provide a seeding meeting or a conference call to cover each weight, the seeds, and drawing of byes.
10. If a weight class needs to be reseeded after the seeding meeting, the reseeding will take place with all coaches present at the coaches meeting prior to the start of the tournament.
11. There is no deadline for removing one wrestler and replacing that wrestler with an alternate. This can be done up to the coaches meeting prior to the start of the tournament. A wrestler cannot be changed to a different weight class after the seed meeting. If you remove a wrestler and the wrestler is not replaced, then the spot is considered a forfeit.
“Known Talent”
Description of Known Talent:
The point of “known talent” is to provide a means of seeding a talented wrestler who did not wrestle matches at the entered weight class by the traditional method. For the purpose of seeding the Region postseason individual tournament, “known talent” will be designated based on a specific set of criteria rather than a qualitative assessment or voting process. Any wrestler at each weight class shall be designated as “known talent” before any weight class is seeded.
Criteria to designate “known talent”
Did not wrestle matches during the season and entered for the post-season tournament for injury, illness, weather, or a fall sport entering the postseason.
Placed top 6 at the previous VHSL State Championship or a Region Finalist from last season
Did not lose head-to-head to any other wrestler entered in the same weight class at the post-season tournament.
Placed at Top tier events that year/season i.e., Beast, Powerade, Ironman, Fargo…
Seeding “known talent”
A wrestler designated as “known talent” who is undefeated against all region opponents entered at this weight class is seeded #1.
If multiple wrestlers designated as “known talent” are entered in one weight class, a higher placer in last year’s past season criteria will get the top seed.
If criteria b is not applicable, and they have not defeated the top seeds (1-4), there will be a random draw to place them at 6 or 7 by popsicle sticks
A “known talent” cannot be seeded ahead of any wrestler entered at the weight class that has defeated the “known talent” head-to-head at the conference duals.
