John 1:1-18
Jesus is the Word
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
John 14:5-7
Jesus Says He is Truth, the Way, and the Life
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Jesus has been with the world and universe from the very beginning...He was the Word and is the Word and was with God from the very beginning...And the Word is God, and thus Jesus is God...Through Jesus all things were created, including us...Those who believe these statements believe that somehow this is the Truth, and that He is the Way and the One that gives Life meaning and Life its purpose...
When Jesus told Thomas and His other Disciples that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, He was telling us that He is Absolute Truth...No one can get to God, except through Him...When we know who Jesus is, then we know who God is as well...Jesus is telling us that He is Truth, and in telling us that He is Truth, He is also telling us that He is Absolutely Moral...In these verses, Jesus is also telling us that He is Something Special and Someone Special...He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life...So those who believe in Him believe that life is more than mere chance, and that life is more than a series of random events...
Douglas Williams writes about God and about randomness in life and our how our brains might process thoughts two different ways...Williams says, “If there is no God, then all that exists is time and chance acting on matter...If this is true then the difference between your thoughts and mine correspond to the difference between shaking up a bottle of Mountain Dew and a bottle of Dr. Pepper...You simply fizz atheistically and I fizz theistically...This means that you do not hold to atheism because it is true, but rather because of a series of chemical reactions...Morality, tragedy, and sorrow are equally evanescent...They are all empty sensations created by the chemical reactions of the brain, in turn created by too much pizza the night before...If there is no God, then all abstractions are chemical epiphenomena, like swamp gas over fetid water...This means that we have no reason for assigning truth and falsity to the chemical fizz we call reasoning or right and wrong to the irrational reaction we call morality...If no God, mankind is a set of bi-pedal carbon units of mostly water...And nothing else.”...
Because we come to God by way of our thought processes information and our brains, then you either believe that Truth, Morality, and Life are just a series of random events and Jesus is a non-event...You have to question everything, because how would you know that your thoughts are rational if life is all chance and randomness...Can you believe in these random thoughts?...But if you believe in Jesus then He controls Life and the Way our brains processes thoughts...Believers believe that our fate is somehow controlled by Him...And that He is full of grace and Truth...And that He actually is the Way, the Truth, and Life itself, because we are all made through Him...Believers see and think that He is the purpose and Creator of Life...Truth in action and in Their Words, is always the correct and moral thing to do...And the One who called Himself the Truth was Perfectly Moral...
