John 14:1-14
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus the Way to God our Father
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Job 42:1-6
Job Replies to God's Questions
1 Then Job replied to the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;
no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.’
5 My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you.
6 Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes.”
Jesus comforts His Disciples...Jesus told His Disciples that He would soon be going to heaven to prepare a place for them...Then He tells them that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life...Then He tells His Disciples that anyone who has seen Him, has seen the True God in heaven...And yet, the Disciples the ones who knew Him best do not understand His talk about heaven, and Thomas tells Him they do not know where He is going...And Philip says show us the Father and Jesus answers Him, "How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?...Don’t you believe that I AM in the Father, and that the Father is in Me?...The words I say to you I do not speak on My own authority...Rather, it is the Father, living in Me, who is doing His work...Believe Me when I say that I AM in the Father and the Father is in Me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves."...
In the middle of these statements to His Disciples, He tells them that He is the Only Way to God...Jesus is surrounded by mystery...Those that knew Him the most, and was with Him the longest, could not decipher and understand what He was telling them...Just when we think we understand God we cannot and do not, because we cannot understand the complexity and eternal nature of His Being...He is Infinite...HE WILL BE WHAT HE WILL BE...He is I AM...He is Always Present...
These statements to His Disciples, underline His Great Mystery...Let us marvel at the Mystery as Job did...Sometimes when we speak or write of God we do not know if it is right or not...Job said it best when he told God that he had spoken of things about God that he did not understand, things that were too wonderful for him to even know....When God told Job to listen now, and I will speak; and now I will question you, and you shall answer Me....Job had no answers...All Job had was his awe in what he was hearing and seeing...Job's ears had heard of God, but now his eyes had seen this Great Mystery...Job admits to speaking about things he could not understand...Therefore Job despised himself and would repent in dust and ashes...There are Some Things so sacred, holy, and good that we cannot understand them, and they remain a mystery to us...Let us as the Disciples and Job saw, keep seeking this Great Mystery and keeping our faith in Someone and Something so Mysterious...Let us seek the Mystery with our hearts and souls...
