Hebrews 6:13-20
Hope is the Anchor for the Soul
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
John 14:1-7
Jesus is Our Way to God
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
As we read these verses from the author of Hebrews, we see that our soul needs an anchoring....Most men believe in the holy and the sacred...Men swear by Someone Greater than Themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all arguments...Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, He confirmed His promise with an oath...God gave us an oath for a reason, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged by His oath to Abraham...We have this hope as an anchor for our souls...And this hope that is in our souls and that rests in our faith is firm and secure...Our faith and hope in our souls enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain where those things are sacred and holy...So where Jesus, who went before us and has been in heaven...He has entered heaven on our behalf, and has prepared a place there for us...Jesus is our Way to God, our Way to heaven, and is our Mediator with God...
The soul needs an anchor and that anchor is Jesus...
