John 14:1-31
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus the Way to the Father
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
“Come now; let us leave.
There is this unbreakable connection between faith and Truth in Jesus...In a world perpetually searching for stable ground, for answers that truly satisfy, the concept of Truth often seems elusive, fragmented, or purely subjective...It is precisely into such a world, where hearts are often troubled, that Jesus speaks words of profound comfort and direction, inviting us, as He did His disciples in John 14:1, to "not let your hearts be troubled...You believe in God; believe also in Me."...Yet, Jesus Christ, our LORD and Savior, cuts through all ambiguity, offering the profound and singular declaration that changes everything: He Himself is the Truth...Through His life, His teachings, and His very Person, Jesus strongly emphasized the inseparable connection between faith and Truth, revealing that one cannot exist authentically without the other...He teaches us to have a strong faith, while telling us that He is the Truth, and came to earth to testify to the Truth, and when we follow Him, His Truth will set us free...
Some key aspects of how Jesus intertwined faith and Truth are foundational to understanding the Christian journey through life...Firstly, He is the Truth...In perhaps His most definitive statement on the matter, Jesus declared in John 14:6, "I AM the Way and the Truth and the Life...No one comes to the Father except through Me."...This bold assertion means that for His followers, Truth is not merely an abstract philosophical concept, a set of verifiable facts, or a moral code to be deciphered...Instead, Truth is living, breathing, and embodied in His Person and His teachings...To know Truth is to know Jesus...This contrasts sharply with worldly notions of truth, which are often relative, shifting with cultural currents or individual perspectives...Jesus offers an absolute, unchanging Truth that is intimately personal...We know that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever - as is the Truth...
Secondly, Jesus taught that knowing Truth brings ultimate and absolute liberation...He promised, in John 8:31-32, "If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples...Then you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free."...This profound statement suggests that faith in Him, believing in Him, and adherence to His words are essential prerequisites to truly understanding and experiencing the freedom that Truth brings...The "freedom" Jesus speaks of is not merely political or social liberty, but a spiritual liberation from the bondage of sin, deception, spiritual darkness, and the lies that so often enslave the human heart...It is the freedom to live in right relationship with God, to fulfill one's purpose, and to walk in the Light of His Divine Will...This freedom is accessed not by intellectual assent alone, but by a committed, living faith that actively engages with His teachings...
And we know that faith is intrinsically grounded in God's Truth. Biblical faith, as Hebrews 11:1 teaches us, is described as "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."...This definition highlights that faith is not a blind leap into the unknown, but a confident trust based on the solid ground of God's character and His unfailing promises, which are presented as Absolute Truth...We cannot see God the Father or Jesus in their Divine form with our physical eyes, but our faith is built upon the Truth of their Existence, Their nature, and Their redemptive plan as revealed in Scripture...This trust is not irrational; it is a reasoned response to the overwhelming evidence of God's faithfulness throughout history and in individual lives...
Ultimately, salvation can only be found in One Man, Jesus, and it is through faith in Him and the Truth He embodies that we receive it...Faith in Jesus Christ is presented as the singular means by which individuals receive salvation and are brought into relationship with God...This saving faith is based entirely on the Truth of who Jesus is (the Son of God, fully Divine, fully human) and what He has done (lived a Perfect Life, died on the cross as an atonement for sins, and rose again, conquering death)....It is in this profound context that Jesus promised His disciples the Holy Spirit, assuring them in John 14:16-17 that He would send another Advocate (or Comforter, Helper), the Spirit of Truth, who would be with them forever and live in them...The Holy Spirit plays a vital role here, convicting hearts, illuminating Truth, and enabling individuals to respond in faith...As this Spirit of Truth (further described in John 14:26 and 16:13), He not only guides us towards Jesus but also teaches us all things, brings to remembrance everything Jesus taught, and testifies about Him, solidifying our understanding of God's Absolute Truth...
In essence, Jesus teaches us that He is the very Source of Truth, not just someone who taught Truth...He teaches us the God's Word is Truth...Faith in Him leads to the knowledge and experience of liberating Truth...Therefore, Truth is a Person...Authentic faith is inextricably linked with and grounded in Truth...It is not a vague hope or a subjective feeling, but a confident trust based on the Absolute Truth of God's Word and the very Person of Jesus...His teachings demonstrate a profound intertwining of faith and truth, where faith is the means of accessing and experiencing the Truth that is in Him...And it is done through our faith and having a true relationship with Him, allowing His Spirit to continually guide us into all Truth and deeper freedom...
