Karen was born and educated in London, making the beginning of her painting career focused on scrap yards and urban landscapes. Since then, Karen has lived in East Anglia for the past 28 years - she now takes inspiration for her work from the coast and countryside of the area.
Gradually, Karen's painting has become more minimalist as she has moved towards trying to represent an atmosphere in her paintings rather than just a photographic representation. Her move towards a more minimalist approach involves many decisions, including what to take out and what to leave in her paintings in order to achieve her desired result of creating an atmosphere.

'Distant Horizons'
"I consider myself a colourist as colour has always been an important element of my work. I tend to use a limited palette in my work which helps me achieve the effect I'm looking for. When I'm out and about I always make notes about the time, weather and how I feel about a place as well as sketching and taking photographs. These observations are then used to help me develop a painting once I return to my studio.
