Life drawing sessions are an invaluable way to develop your observation skills, and practice different drawing techniques with a variety of mediums, building your confidence capturing the human figure. Drawing the nude figure enables us to study proportions between refence points which are often covered and understand how muscles and joints move and align, and study the play of light and shape on the smooth continuous form.
During these friendly and relaxed evening sessions suitable for all levels, we will carry out a variety of drawing exercises ranging from 1-20 minutes, focussing on either mark making techniques with different mediums, tones or proportion, followed by a longer pose of 45 minutes to an hour. Each week will have a different focus and alternate between male and female models. Our regular models are Craig and Felicity.
Materials provided including home made charcoal, paper, drawing boards and easels but feel free to bring your own sketch book and favourite pencils, pastels and paints. If you prefer to sit on the floor please bring a cushion as the floor is tiled. To book, click here or call 07867537419
Some examples of work from my previous life drawing sessions:
<1 minute exercises in capturing shape, movement & tone:
Focussing on cast shadows and/or tone using false colour (chalk pastel and acrylic paint):
Planning out for longer poses:
There are several different tried and tested ways to get proportions mapped out before starting on a longer piece - you will get to try a few different methods.
Further studies in tone & shade - using charcoal, putty rubber and chalk for highlights:
Further studies in using colour pencils 1 minute & 20 minute
Studies on hands and feet:
Overlaying several poses helps with grasping changes to shape and proportion while trying to keep the scale the same.
Often we will use the same pose or small changes in pose to practice different styles within different time limits:
Studying the face:
Finding the vertical in asymmetric and unusual poses:
