Who Do You Love

Mike Pachelli breaks down the song, “Who Do You Love?,” by Bo Diddley. This song was released in 1956 by the Checker Record Co., which later became Chess Records.

Bo Diddley influenced many major acts including; the Beatles, The Stones and Jimi Hendrix, largely because of his ability to fuse blues and rock with his driving rhythm. That’s why he became known as “The Originator.” Bo’s “shave and a haircut- two bits” rhythm became his signature and was used on his 1st first hit, which was called, Bo Diddley. But for “Who Do You Love,” his 5th single, he used a more traditional rhythm based on repetitive 16th notes.

The web is covered with live versions of Bo Diddley playing “Who Do You Love” live with stars like Ron Wood & Steve Cropper. Each version has slight variations on the rhythm and is played at different tempos. When artists like George Thorogood perform the song, they do it with the traditional Bo Diddley rhythm. This lesson will explain the original 1956 recording and talk about how to incorporate the famous Bo Diddley strum into the song also.

Mike plays a Gibson Custom L-5 CT in the lesson.
