Cocaine Blues

Brandon Trapp, from MusikWorks Studios and lead guitarist of Austin Roberts An Em', shows you how to play a classic tune from the prolific “Man In Black.” This lesson is Johnny Cash's “Cocaine Blues,” specifically Cash’s legendary performance at Folsom Prison.

The song was originally written by TJ “Red” Arnall, and is a reworking of the traditional song, “Little Sadie”. The lyrics weave the tale of a man named Wille Lee, who while strung out on cocaine and whiskey, shot his woman to death. As punishment for his crime he received 99 years in the San Quentin Pen. Notably, Cash changed the name from San Quentin to Folsom in his performance.

Brandon plays a Gibson Acoustic Hummingbird and an Epiphone 1966 Worn Wilshire Tremotone in this lesson.

In the 7th grade Brandon got his first real guitar. After learning a few chords he found a 50's and 60's songbook lying around the house. Currently Brandon is a working musician and a guitar teacher at MusikWorks Studios in Rome, GA and is a regular contributor to Gibson.com.
