Adding a Line It Up Task

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1:

To create a new Line It Up task, create a new activity, or open a pre-existing one. Then click the drop-down menu in the right top corner under the “New Task Type” line, and select “Line it up.” Then click the “+ Add Task” button.

Step 2:

A task card for Line It Up will be created, and a task menu for Line It Up will automatically appear.

Step 3:

Click on the text box under “Goal Graph”, and a keypad will pop up. You can click on the keypad or type in the formula for the goal graph you want to create. This goal graph will be the stationary graph that your students will try to match their answer to.

Step 4:

Under the “Instructions for students”, you can either use the default instruction or type in a specific instruction for your students. These instructions will appear at the top of the student task card.

Step 5:

Under “Prompt for students”, add a prompt for your students to instruct them on how they can work with the equations. The default sentence here can also stay if not edited.

Step 6:

Under “Create equation options for your students to choose from”, you can create the graph formulas that will be available to students. “Generic Formula” is how the option will appear to students initially (e.g., y = ax + b is the generic formula for a line; y = ax2 + bx + c is a parabola). “With starting values” is how the graph function will appear once your students click the generic formula and work with it.

If you want the student to be able to scrub the number, add a letter (e.g., “a”, “b”) in the place where you would want the scrubbing to take place.

In our example (right), the generic formula is y = x2 + a, which is what students will see as an option. Then once they click on the formula, a new formula with a starting value, which is y = x2 + 5 will appear. Because the coefficient “a” is now replaced by “5” in the formula, your students will be able to scrub the coefficient 5 to change their graph.

Step 7:

If you want another available choice for the students to answer select “ + ADD OPTION”. The same rules apply for this one as well.

If you want to create a formula that does not allow scrubbing, you can type the set graph formula in the “Generic formula” box.

In our example, since the formula “y = x2 + 2” is entered directly in the generic formula option, students will see this equation as an option, but they cannot scrub or change any coefficient.
