Adding a Hot Spot Task

Step-By-step GuidE:

Step 1:

To create a new Hot Spot task, first create a new activity or select the existing activity where you want to add the Hot Spot task.

Then click on the dropdown menu under the “New Task Type” line, and select “Hot spot”. Then click on the “+ Add Task” button.

Step 2:

A task card for Hot Spot will be created, and a task menu for Hot Spot will automatically appear.

Step 3:

First, upload a picture for your students to see and work with. To upload a picture, you can either drag an image from your computer onto this blank box, or you can click on the box, browse and upload an image from your computer.

Step 4:

Once an image is uploaded, you can write instructions to students on what they should do.

In our example, our image is a worked example of a math problem, but it has a mistake. We want our students to locate where the mistake is, so we write an instruction accordingly.

Step 5:

You can then mark the areas where you want your students to locate if they respond correctly. The concept is similar to a multiple choice task: once you mark an area as correct, if your students select that area, their answer will be recorded as correct.

To mark these areas, click and drag anywhere on the image to create a blue box that covers the desired area.

Step 6:

You can also turn the Hot Spot task into a task similar to “Check all that apply”. For example, if you upload a worked math problem with multiple mistakes and you want your students to select all of them, you can create multiple blue boxes on your image.

Then under the “Number of Markers” section, you can select “Students can place multiple markers (up to 10)” to allow your students to select multiple areas in one picture.

If you only have 1 area, you can choose the option: “Students can place one marker”.

Step 7:

In the “Feedback and Scoring” section, you can require students to select all of the interested areas by choosing “Students need to mark all hotspot areas”; or you can allow students to select one and not all by choosing “Students need to mark at least one hotspot”.

Step 8:

Some problems are easy for students to spot mistakes, but some are more difficult, so it might be helpful for your students to have a space to work out the problems and see where the mistakes are.

You can do so by checking the box “Provide GM Workspace with the image” and provide your students with the first line of the problem. Your student will have a GMA Canvas to work the problem out on.

Step 9:

You can also add a reflection prompt for your students. This is a great way for your students to reflect on their work and deepen their understanding.

Open the dropdown menu under the “Additional Option” at the bottom, check the “Include reflection prompt” box, and write the question you want your students to answer.
