Trend Analysis: Coquette
Trend Analysis: Coquette
I love this aesthetic. I don't want to call it an aesthetic, because I feel like that makes it sound tiktok-ish, but I still love it. I put this style in the Trend Forecasting Project as a trend, but I love it so much that I'm putting it in here.
It involves a lot of pink and femininity. Bows, lace, and ribbons are probably the most notable things about it. It also involves a lot of vintage style spanning throughout the 20th century, as that's what it's based on. To me, the most notable decades for the style are the 90s and the 50s. Or whenever the Romantic period was. All around, I just love it. How feminine and delicate it looks, the movies people associate it with, and the fact it can be done with all colors, even though pink is the most notable.
I've been slowly trying to convert my wardrobe to this style the best way I can, but it's slightly hard when you usually wear pants most of the time. I'm also scared of messing up my white clothes. I'd get the looser jeans but I don't wear jeans enough to care. The easiest thing about this aesthetic is the shoes to me. They're often basic and can go with a lot of things, like the platform oxfords. If you say you don't have an outfit to go with them you're not trying. I do plan on getting those at some point, but priorities come first. I did convince my boyfriend to get me some loafers from ZARA though. I'm excited about that because they'll probably be a Christmas present.
Now, as much as I love this style, there are some major issues with it. For example, it really only promotes skinny white girls, similar to VS. Which is scary because that can also promote eating disorders and idealize white culture. It sucks because it's a beautiful style, but there are still people in the world who think that it's only for skinny white girls. They think that people who look like me are too masculine to wear things like this. It's ok though because we're still going to enjoy these types of aesthetics.
Coquette is a French word that refers to an attractive young woman. Oftentimes hyper-feminine. Probably unfortunately, this style is commonly overlapped with something called the "babygirl" aesthetic, which is used in a sexual way. The style of coquette that I like is mostly referred to as "dollete." Balletcore is also something that I like, but I want to incorporate them both into my wardrobe. These three often overlap so it can be hard to distinguish which is which. But I still love them anyway.
This was honestly just another appreciation post for a style that I like :) I'll add in some images of what I want my personal image to look like in the future.
