Corsets
Corsets
Corsets seem to be part of one's everyday wardrobe more and more now. I'm not complaining, as they're very cute. Also when I wear one it means I don't have to wear a bra, so it's a win-win situation. Sort of. No matter how big you are, they have to be tight enough to stay up. Which can be suffocating if you're wearing them for a long time. But what's interesting about corsets is that I've only ever seen them be worn like 200 years ago, or today. There's like no in-between. Though the ones from today are definitely more comfortable, and I think there's more variety in how they look. But I always wondered how they were made into sizes and stuff.
Obviously, as I take what is basically a fashion history class, I know that the boning in them was like pieces of wood or actual bones. But did they have standardized sizing at some point with these? Or were they always custom-made until like the late 20th century?
I looked on Wikipedia, and it said that GENUINE corsets are made to the wearer's body by a corset-maker, while the ones we usually wear have little to no effect on the wearer's body. So most corsets you see on people are just accentuating their shape and not creating that extra tiny waist effect that looked like it hurt back then. Both men and women are known to wear corsets throughout history though, which is interesting because men don't like them that much right now. Though some do look good in them.
I don't see this type of clothing going out of style anytime soon. Corsets are just so pretty, and now there are many types of them instead of the main ones squeezing the life out of you. Like in the middle picture above. If you looked on an online store, it would be called a corset belt, and it's literally just as it says. It's only the middle part. And from what I see, a lot of them have elastic so one size could fit a myriad of sizes. The one on the right is a type of corset thing I also love very much. It gives the illusion of cinching one's waist without the actual boning. And the top is usually like that or ruffled in some kind of way.
Now the men in corsets. The ones I see on Pinterest are REALLY nice looking on them if you know what I mean. But I think this could look terrifying in real life bc most men don't have curves like this. Their bodies just aren't shaped like that. I think I need to see it in real life to determine whether I TRULY like them on men because the camera does distort one's image sometimes. Also, angles have a big part to play in that as well. I wonder what would experiment with them, most of the K-pop idols I listen to, or someone like Harry Styles? He's the first person I thought of because he's one of the main people to experiment the most with this type of stuff. I would say Dennis Rodman as well, but that type of thing would've been years ago for him. I don't think he's feeling this specific type of clothing, since he's older.
I'm not sure if this will be a trend in the future or if it's just going to be a fad. I'd love it if this ended up being a full-on trend because it'll basically be another addition to men's formalwear. A rather fashionable addition to formalwear, because that's really only what I saw in terms of men's corsets. However, people, mostly on TikTok, will find a way to make them into their casual wear.
