2020 Alt Phase
2020 Alt Phase
2020 was an interesting time for everything. The fashion was...interesting. Not in a bad way, but it was certainly something. I think a style that most of us would remember is the alt style of 2020. This was everywhere. The Demonias, the bunny hats, and to me, the much-used striped socks. Leg warmers were also used, but it was only if they had short boots on and not knee-high boots.
I thought this style was really cool, but these people often got a bad rep. Some were okay, but most were really annoying or just straight-up racist. I remember scrolling on TikTok and seeing one of these people saying how dark-skinned people give them anxiety. They were blocking people and trying to explain how they weren't racist, but they ultimately got banned so that's good. I just hope future employers don't see that though, because digital footprint is REAL. Another reason why people who dressed like this got a bad rep is because they wanted people to call them things like "it/itself", "bun/bunself", or "kitten/kittenself." Yes, these are real things I remember, and yes I was questioning how they'd get through school because most of these people were teenagers. Some of them also wore tails acting like they were animals, mostly cats, dogs, and wolves. I wonder where these types of people are now, three years later.
Now to evaluate the actual style and not the people. This style involves a lot of elements. Hiding your face seems to be part of this aesthetic as well, which is interesting. But there's a lot of baggy t-shirts and/or pants, PLAID, and again, some type of platform. Sanrio was also really prevalent, especially My Melody and Kuromi. Whether it was plushies, shirts, or accessories, they were there. I think my favorite part of this whole thing was the plaid skirts. I loved seeing the different variations of plaid skirts. Color-wise, it was usually pink, black, white, and red. Many were pleated or just an A-line skirt, but they served their purpose. Something I especially loved was the tutus and fishnets/tights. I've always loved tutus, I just never wore them. But the fishnets and tights? I loved seeing the different variations on them. Whether they were the basic default ones or the distressed ones, they were amazing. The third image below, with the red skirt, was one of my favorites. And the fact that you could make them like that for free was even more appealing to me. My uncles and aunts would understand, as they're the ones into fashion. My parents and grandparents, well, they'd assume I'd be like emo or goth or something like that.
But someone who actually wears this type of stuff would be my younger sister. She actually has the Demonias, the tights, and the skirts. I'd put a picture on here, but she's not really one for pictures. Also, I just don't have any of her in her teen years. But still. I even bought her a Kuromi cardigan for her birthday. I wonder what I should get her for Christmas, though it'll probably be something Sanrio-related, just like the people above and below. Interestingly enough, she's not a fan of long sleeves for shirts. Mostly sweaters. It's fine though because if I ask, she'll tell me.
Thankfully, this era is over in terms of the type of people...sort of. If I had the chance to go back and have this wardrobe, I don't think I would. 2020 TikTok was a very interesting place no matter what side of it you were on, so I think I'll survive. Though I do want to have some distressed tights.
