Lettuce Trim (Stephen Burrows)
Lettuce Trim (Stephen Burrows)
Lettuce trim clothing has become popular in recent years, especially in fast fashion retailers. It's a style that's been all over the place, but where did it come from?
Born on September 15, 1943, Burrows went on to be one of the first black fashion designers to sell internationally and develop a high-fashion clientele. After graduating from Newark Arts High School, he went to the Philadelphia Museum College of Arts and transferred to FIT. There, he met Betty Davis, who became his muse.
Since he was fascinated with how knit stretched, he experimented with it and accidentally created what we know as the "lettuce trim." It was originally made with knitted textiles (jersey fabric which is usually wool) so it could hold its shape. It was very popular in the 70s, reemerged in the 90s with babydoll t-shirts, and then became popular again within the last few years.
For me, I'm very partial to this style of clothing. I don't like it on the collars of shirts, but it's cute on the sleeves. But maybe it's because I have a SHEIN lettuce trim top to layer with stuff.
Now whether you like the lettuce trim or not, you can't deny that it hasn't had an impact on fashion today. In the cycle of trends, I do see how this could become popular again in another 20-ish years.
